Because lately there has been talk about comedians no longer wanting to perform at colleges due to the stigma of being to PC (Politically Correct). It seems the younger generation who is keener to the dissection of meaning these days has been quick to point out the flaws of a performers jokes. As if to let it be known that somethings aren’t to be made light of. Which is progress in terms of enlightenment but taken too seriously in the eyes of a standup comic. Performers have even went as far as to say they’d prefer to stay away from college campuses now for this reason.
With that point in case, the other day I came across a video showing a classic George Carlin stand up show. Which can be very edgy content and he points out that he felt as if anything could be made a joke out of. But it depended on the context of which the joke is told which hit it right in the nose when it comes down to the responsibility of what is being said. Everyone can agree that no one can just go on stage and say whatever they want without considering that they may offend people. Louis C.K. is a prime example of that even though everyone is aware that he aims for the low point in his material.
But that didn’t save him when he went too far on Saturday Night Live even though the downside is that he became a house hold name because of it. Yet, when you think about what offensive things Louis was willing to say in that segment you have to wonder what other comedians are doing to fuel that fire. Most of them like to hide behind the basis that creating a stir is part of the art that comes with their craft. Even George stood behind that ideal but sadly he was one of the few willing to acknowledge that there are guidelines. My assumption is that his method was based on the respect he had for his fan base and audience which can be lack luster these days when it comes to one speaking their mind.
Then again maybe it’s just that bubble well paid comedians live in that separates them from society at large. While forgetting that these are dark times and people will not be so flexible because of it.
